News broke on February 17 that Jacobs died at the age of 49. According to a statement from Metropolitan Nashville Police, the “Little Bit Gypsy” songwriter died by apparent suicide at the couple’s home.
“Nashville’s Department of Emergency Communications received a 911 call at 1:21 p.m. Friday from a home on Sneed Road in the police department’s West Precinct. Officers and Nashville Fire Department personnel responded and located resident Kyle Jacobs, 49, deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in an upstairs bedroom/office,” the department’s statement read. “Mr. Jacobs’ wife, Kellie Pickler, reported that she awoke a short time earlier, did not see her husband, and began looking for him. After she and her personal assistant were unable to open the door to the upstairs bedroom/office, the assistant telephoned 911.”

Five months after Jacobs’ death, Pickler broke her silence.
“One of the most beautiful lessons my husband taught me was in a moment of a crisis if you don’t know what to do, ‘do nothing, just be still.’ I have chosen to heed his advice,” she said in an August 2023 statement to People. “Thank you to my family, friends, and supporters, for the countless letters, calls, and messages that you have sent my way. It has truly touched my soul and it’s helping me get through the darkest time in my life. As many of you have told me, you are all in my prayers.”

The following year, Pickler entered a legal battle with Jacobs’ parents, who are the co-administrators of their late son’s estate. The family allegedly demanded that Pickler hand over certain personal items that belonged to Jacobs. The singer denied having the items and accused Jacobs’ parents of removing certain items from her home without her knowledge.
Pickler filed a motion order requiring her in-laws to identify the items that they obtained from her home. Jacobs’ parents later claimed they received an “express invitation” from Pickler and her legal team to retrieve some of their son’s items.
Picker was later granted a protective order.

Pickler’s legal battle with her in-laws continued as Jacobs’ parents filed a subpoena against the funeral home for information about Jacobs’ funeral and cremation. The funeral home has allegedly refused to comply with the request and has not filed an objection.
